Typewriters
In 1931, Burroughs entered into the typewriter market. A handsome manual machine was followed the following year with a version with a motorized carriage return. In the later years the machines were sold with special paper handling features and sold as billing machines. Burroughs created the "Typewriter Division" within the company to build and market typewriters, an indication of the potential business they were hoping for. Sadly, the typewriter market was the domain of several large, well established companies and the Burroughs typewriters never captured a significant part of the market.
Burroughs suspended the production of Typewriters during WWII.
Models - There were two models of the Burroughs Typewriters. The Model 50 did not have a motor and did not feature motorized carriage return. The Model 60 did have a motor and motorized carriage return. At Burroughs we called the motorized carriage return the MCR feature. The MCR capability was a major feature of the Class 60 machines and earned Burroughs a place in the market for their typewriters.

You may find the model serial number of your machine may have a two digit number before an alpha "A", all before the actual serial number. The two digits will be 5x or 6x. The 5x indicates a Class 50 non-electric machine. The 6x indicates a Class 60 with electric carriage return. The second digit seems to indicate the size of the carriage as follows:
50/60 = 11” carriage, (11-1/8” paper capacity, 10’’ writing line)
51/61 = 13” carriage (13” paper capacity, 11.6” writing line)
52/62 = 15” carriage (15” paper capacity, 13.6” writing line)
53/63 = 18” carriage (18” paper capacity, 16.5” writing line)
54/64 = 22” carriage (22” paper capacity, 20.5” writing line)
55/65 = 26” carriage (26” paper capacity, 24.6” writing line)
Serial number are located on a flat side of a carriage rail on the left side of the machine. It see the serial number, move the carriage all the way to the right. The serial number will be visible and is facing the front of the machine.
